Bridges at the Bryn Mawr School

Bridges at Bryn Mawr opened in June of 2022 under the direction of Julia Dimaio, a former Bridges Summer Institute teacher. The first summer began with one class of rising fourth graders and one class of rising fifth graders. As the years progress, Bridges at Bryn Mawr will continue to provide year-round supports to these students through college and beyond, and will recruit a new class of fourth graders to grow the program annually.

Baltimore City youth enter Bridges at Bryn Mawr just after third grade and engage in a year-round, 13-year program that helps them to find consistent success from elementary school through college and into the start of their careers.

Upper school students from Bryn Mawr and the tri-school community engage with Bridges’ youngest students as tutors in the After-School Program and assistant counselors in the Summer Institute.

The experience creates a space for Bryn Mawr students to build close and caring relationships with Baltimore City students, learn more about issues of unequal access and opportunity in Baltimore, and be part of building a more inclusive and equitable society.

About the Bryn Mawr School

Located in Baltimore, Maryland, The Bryn Mawr School is a private all-girls pre-kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school with a coed preschool for ages two months through five years. Bryn Mawr provides students with exceptional educational opportunities on a 26-acre campus within the city limits. A Bryn Mawr education is grounded in the expectation that young women will be resilient in the face of complexity, ambiguity, and change; will become responsible and confident participants in the world; and will lead considered and consequential lives.

Get Involved

Upper school students from The Bryn Mawr School and its tri-school community (Gilman, Roland Park Country School) have year-round volunteer opportunities in programs for Bridges’ youngest students:

  • Become an After School Tutor: The Bridges Elementary After School Program runs from September to May. Upper School volunteers commit to one season at a time and help guide enrichment activities and provide 1-on-1 homework help to their fourth and fifth grade buddies.
  • Become a Summer Counselor: The Bridges Elementary / Middle Summer Institute runs for five weeks in June/July. Volunteer roles for Upper School students last for two weeks and include assisting in the classroom, helping to chaperone field trips, coordinating special activities, and being an overall positive presence at Bridges.
